On February 13th, Queen Elizabeth Public School welcomed parents and guardians for a Literacy Session presented through the OCDSB’s Student Achievement Through Equity (SATE) Inquiry. The goal of the session was to equip parents of kindergarten to grade 2 students with practical literacy tools that would help them in building their children’s reading, writing and oral language skills.
The session was led by Literacy Coaches and Speech Language Pathologists, in collaboration with SATE staff Sadia and Lily, who shared helpful strategies and take-away resources. The Ottawa Public Library supported the event by donating books, speaking about the children’s programs that they offer, and providing parents an opportunity to register library cards. Bridgehead generously provided delicious refreshments.
Parents and caregivers appreciated the opportunity to discuss ways to build literacy skills at home. Here’s some of the feedback they shared:

“[This session helped]. I have a few extra tricks up my sleeves.”
“[This session] enhanced my knowledge and gave useful tools to enhance my own sessions at home.”
