Our School

Queen Elizabeth is starting its 56th year as a warm and welcoming learning environment for students in this northeast community of Ottawa. Visitors to the school are able to view the artwork created by the students in honour of the Governor General’s visit for our 50th Anniversary Celebration. The artwork, which lines the walls of our school, showcases the countries of origin for many of our students. Students and their families experience an “Open Doors, Open Minds” philosophy. Students are welcomed into the school early in the morning to get help with homework, work on extra‐curricular activities or to just get an early start to their academic day. In addition to academics, students at Queen Elizabeth learn problem solving strategies and skills to help them become responsible citizens while demonstrating pride in their school. Graduates of Queen Elizabeth often come back to visit or volunteer at the school!

Our Students

Enrollment this year in programs from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, including our French Immersion programs, is 348 students. Students entering Grade 7 come from our feeder schools of Queen Mary, Manor Park, R.E. Wilson and Rockcliffe Park School.  Students at Queen Elizabeth hail from countries all around the world.  Our annual language survey has shown that students in our school speak 34 languages, other than English, at home.  Graduating students go on to a variety of high schools in the area, with the majority attending Rideau High School for our English program and Gloucester High School for the French Immersion program.

Our Staff

Queen Elizabeth boasts a highly experienced, educated and dedicated staff,who are second to none.  Staff arrive early and stay late into the afternoon offering both academic and extra‐curricular activities for students to broaden their experiences and expertise in these areas.  In addition to our Teaching Staff, we have the strong support of our Educational Assistants and Child Youth Workers, the Custodial Staff, our Office Staff, a part‐time Library Technician, a Multicultural Liaison Officer and a School Resource Officer.  The Teaching Staff are life‐long learners and hold various additional qualifications including Specialist qualifications in areas such as Special Education,  English as a Second Language, French as a Second Language, Guidance, Computers, Reading and Physical Education.  The staff from all divisions work collaboratively to create a positive and productive atmosphere for all of our students.  Many cross divisional activities are planned throughout the school year where our younger students come together with our older students to create a nurturing atmosphere that fosters positive learning for everyone.

Our Community

The Queen Elizabeth School Council consists of a group of parents and staff volunteers united in their commitment to learning excellence.The School Council operates in an environment characterized by teamwork,respect, transparency, and trust. Its objectives are to maintain a strong relationship among home,school and the community by promoting quality education in a dynamic, diverse and safe learning environment.  School Council along with staff organize fund‐raising activities to support student learning and assisting the broader community.  School Council members have also participated in consultations with other schools through the Ottawa Carleton Assembly of School Councils. In keeping with its values, the Queen Elizabeth School Council actively encourages all parents to attend its meetings, to express their views and to input in decision‐making.

Programs and Services

Academic Programs

Queen Elizabeth offers a triple track program:

  • Regular English program JK‐grade 8: Students receive the equivalent of 40 minutes of Core French a day.

  • Middle French Immersion, grades 4, 5, 6: 66% of program is French and 33% of program is English;

  • French Immersion, grades 7 and 8: 50% of the programme is English and 50% is French. English Subjects must include: English & Mathematics. They may also include Science, ARTs rotation; French subjects may include French, History, Geography, Science and Physical Education

  • Intermediate students rotate for specialty subjects: visual arts, instrumental music, and drama & dance. Music is offered in French to our Immersion Students.

The organization for the 2012‐13 academic school year is as follows:

Regular English Program:

  • JK/SK Full Day, Grade 1, Grade 2/3, Grade 3/4, Grade 5/6, Grade 7 (2 classes), Grade 7&8 (1 class), Grade 8 (2 classes)

French Immersion Programs:

Safe Schools Initiatives

Queen Elizabeth has a specific Code of Behaviour that can be found in all student agendas and in the Parent Handbook that is sent home at the start of the school year. Expectations for student behaviour are reviewed with students throughout the year. Students are accountable for their own behaviour and actions. Our students are provided with a safe and welcoming environment where race, ethnicity or gender bias are not tolerated. Additional resources available to the school include a School Resource Officer, a School Psychologist, Social Worker, Occupational Therapists and a Speech and Language Pathologist. Student success is recognized in many ways including our monthly Terrific Kids Assemblies.
